Surgical treatment of severe obesity and diabetes.
For people whose weight has stopped responding to diet and exercise — and started taking their knees, their sleep and their blood sugar with it — bariatric surgery is a medical treatment, not a cosmetic one. Obesity is defined here as a body mass index above 27.5, and as part of the wider metabolic syndrome it has become a serious problem in India, having once been thought of as a disease of richer countries.
Kainos was the first centre in this region to offer bariatric surgery, and more than 500 procedures have been performed by the team and by our lead surgeon independently, with excellent results. Sleeve gastrectomy and bypass procedures are done robotically or laparoscopically, and revisional surgery is available for patients whose earlier operation has not held up.
The programme runs with structured pre-surgery evaluation, dietician involvement and long-term follow-up, because the operation is the start of the journey, not the end.
